It’s a Dangerous World Out There

May 30th, 2008 | Posted by taileong

lang tengah, an island off the coast of terengganu which i will set foot on next saturday. it is located roughly halfway between pulau redang and pulau perhentian, and is connected to the mainland by ferries to merang.

if you directly translate lang tengah to english, it means “an eagle restin in the middle of the island”.

d’coconut lagoon, the resort i will be staying

nice leh the resort… but hey, i’m not goin there for holiday okay! i’m goin there for mct‘s proposed teambuildin module, called structured outdoor survival (s.o.s). it ain’t gonna be a laze-all-you-want-till-we-go-home vacation, but a tirin lack-of-sleep-and-need-more-sleep “vacation”.

it will be a 3 days outin to lang tengah, startin friday midnight where i’ll be departin from mct, uep subang jaya by bus. it is said to be a long 8 hours journey to the jetty in merang, and another 1 hour ferry ride to the island. man, this is like travellin to singapore from sitiawan!

the best part of all is, the list of things to brin along for the program…

6. one face towel, ‘good morning’ type (that sounds funny)
11. torchlight & extra batteries (are we jungle trekkin at night?)
12. a penknife (okay, let’s start stabbin each other)
13. herbal insect repellant (why must the “herbal” word be there?)

i was also told that we need to build a “pondok”, cook whatever we can lay our hands on (that’ll be our dinner, so no catch equals no dinner), and build a boat which floats out of things we can find on the island. feels like lost eh, except without planes crashin and weird encounterments.

i will be postin up photos of the trip, so don’t you worry. for the meantime, i would like to tell you that somethin happened this tuesday.

i was a little late for work, and was climbin up the stairs when, upon reachin up, i noticed some wires danglin around and some colleagues of mine were standin outside the door, chattin away. when i walked past them, i overheard one of them sayin that there was a break in the night before.

bein the not-so-kepo one, i waited till evenin before i confronted a lady from the human resources department and started bombardin her with questions. she said that the burglars (suspected more than one) managed to climb into the office 1st floor back window, disable the alarm system, and head straight to the executive director’s room (my uncle is the chief executive director, which is this case is not his room).

what amazed her was that somehow, they know there are important stuffs kept away in the safe inside that room. just so you know, that safe is as tall as me! luckily, the janitor sleepin in the office was startled by the noise made when the burglars broke the door, and quickly dialed the number of a nearby police station.

within minutes, a police patrol car arrived at the scene. they weren’t smart enough though, as they came in from the front entrance whereas the burglars who overheard the police siren, escaped from the back. they seemed the know the placement of the cctvs well in order to disarm the alarm and avoid the cameras. thanks to the janitor’s quick judgement, nothin was stolen.
