RMVB Media Player
no, not just your regular realplayer.
durin this december 2008 pc fair 3, i noticed the massive availability of products which plays rm/rmvb files on your lcd/tv. usually these products come with the support for an internal hdd, which could turn out costly, but this time it supports the cheap and light-weight alternative: usb thumbdrive. my housemate managed to get hold of one, which i will write about in this post.

the confusing box
this rmvb media player (don’t get fooled by the 2.5″ hdd player wordings written on the box) is one of those made-in-china product, which cost rm200. it is sellin pretty well at the fair, so do check it out.

what's in the box
inside the box is the media player, a remote control, an power adapter, rca plugs (yellow white red cables), and a manual (which we never bother to look as they normally contains broken english).

now, how does this device work? very simple. basically, just plug those yellow, white and red cables to your tv (or use the vga connector to your computer monitor), plug in the adapter, and connect a usb thumbdrive or external harddisk which contains movies to the host1/host2 port and you’re good to go! this media player supports sd cards as well.

rca cables and usb thumbdrive in device
the output resolutions for this media player are ntsc (480i, 480p), pal (576i, 576p), and hd (720p). the on-screen display language are english and chinese, and the dimension for this device is 150 x 105 x 25 mm. the supported video format are as follows:
- realvideo 8/9/10 (*.rm, *.rmvb, *.amrm)
- mpeg1 & mpeg2 (*.mpg, *.mpeg, *.dat)
- dvd (*.vob)
- mpeg4 divx/xvid with subtitle support (*.avi) (so far only tested with *.srt)
- quicktime (*.mov)
- m-jpeg (*.mov, *.avi)
audio format supported are mp3 and wma, and picture format supported are jpeg, bmp, png, gif, tiff, and txt. sadly, the now available high definition rip (*.mkv) is not supported.

another drawback is the usage of china’s socket plug, which you’ll have to invest about rm5 for a converter to be able to use the adapter. now i’m just contemplatin on whether to get this, or the one which supports an internal hdd inside
